<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I am officially leaving the blogging sphere for a while, maybe forever. I have such limited time, and inspiration has been low. Should either of those things change, I'll reconsider.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I pray something I've said has helped you in real life, and I will occasionally visit to see what's going on in your world. If any of you wish to find me on Facebook, you should be able to.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Till we meet again, <span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif; font-size: large;">Adios.Gaylehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06358977156569393289noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8104195277180846890.post-12718134011584900832015-11-13T19:06:00.002-06:002023-08-22T11:55:15.128-05:00Sharing My Gift With The Governor

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">One of my greatest honors as a singer/songwriter, was
meeting Louisiana’s two-term governor Jimmie Davis. He was first elected to office in 1944, and then again in 1960. As a nationally know<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">n singer/songwriter, with several Top Five singles on the country charts during his first term in office, he was o<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">ften referred to as <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">the Singing Governor.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I had the privilege of sharing a concert stage with Governor Davis in 1982. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">A<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">fter the concert, he expressed
a love of our sound and an interest in my songs. At the age of 84, h<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">e was recording a "final" album for his beloved Louisianans, and he was searching for new material to include. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Could we visit him at his home in Baton Rouge, and let him hear more of my tunes?
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Of course, we could. ☺
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Governor Davis and his beautiful wife Anna Gordon Carter (known for her alto vocals in the Chuck Wagon Gang) were the perfect
hosts, and their home rightly reflected elegance and grace.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">After sharing a meal around their dining room table, we drifted to the grand piano. Harmonies soon followed, and as I sat there, making music with the man, whose signature song was "You Are My Sunshine," I knew it was a moment I'd share with my children one day.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Later that night, all settled in my stately bed, it felt a little surreal, knowing the governor and his wife were sleeping down the hall. I remembered my favorite scripture in Proverbs: "A man's gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men." For sure, that had been true in my life, and for sure, it was true tonight.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">The next year, Governor Davis included two of my songs on his album, and we remained in touch through the years. After my daughter was born in 1985, he sent a personal letter of congratulations, which I still have tucked away in a box somewhere.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Following his death on November<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> 5, 2000, <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">The New York Times<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> published an extensive piece about Governor Davis's upbringing and his many accomplishments<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">. His was a real rags-to-riches story, and I will always feel honored<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"> to h<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">ave stitched one tiny thread in the giant tapestry of his remarkable life. ♦
