Simple Pleasure - A Getaway

I took a few days off last week to hang out near the waves and relax. So many pleasures awaited me:

Red geraniums at the door.

Cool sand between my toes.

Seagulls on the beach.

Seagulls in the air.

Morning coffee from the balcony.
A king-sized bed fit for a queen.

Teen Tramps

A friend on Facebook linked to an article today about inappropriate attire for young girls. It reminded me of an article I wrote 10 years ago on the same topic. I'm glad somebody else is finally noticing and speaking out.

Sadly, you can't dictate what your kids wear when they become adults, but parents shouldn't let that stop them from leading their children in the right way early on.

I'm posting a link to my article, which originally appeared in the Dallas Morning News. It was later reprinted by the Jewish World Review. For me, it still packs a powerful punch, and its message is timeless. If you know parents of teens, I hope you'll pass it along.

Simple Pleasure - Home

As a wonder working woman, weekends are for doing things that can't be done during the week. One of my favorite things to "do" is enjoy my humble abode and the lovely things the Creator has blessed me with. It's simple, but brings me much pleasure.

Happy Birthday, Mother

Mother and Me

Mother with her dolls.

Mother with her brood. (Dayle, Elaine & Gayle)

My mother's birthday is Monday. I'll be spending time with her this weekend. I'm beyond grateful for the moments we share. For the life she's lived. For the example she is. It's a privilege calling her "Mom."

Most Christians are familiar with the "virtuous woman" passage in Proverbs. Those verses of Scripture depict my mother perfectly. In her honor, I'm posting them today. In any translation, it's a lovely read. Here it is from The Message.

Proverbs 31:10-31
(The Message)

Hymn to a Good Wife

A good woman is hard to find,
and worth far more than diamonds.
Her husband trusts her without reserve,
and never has reason to regret it.
Never spiteful, she treats him generously
all her life long.
She shops around for the best yarns and cottons,
and enjoys knitting and sewing.
She's like a trading ship that sails to faraway places
and brings back exotic surprises.
She's up before dawn, preparing breakfast
for her family and organizing her day.
She looks over a field and buys it,
then, with money she's put aside, plants a garden.
First thing in the morning, she dresses for work,
rolls up her sleeves, eager to get started.
She senses the worth of her work,
is in no hurry to call it quits for the day.
She's skilled in the crafts of home and hearth,
diligent in homemaking.
She's quick to assist anyone in need,
reaches out to help the poor.
She doesn't worry about her family when it snows;
their winter clothes are all mended and ready to wear.
She makes her own clothing,
and dresses in colorful linens and silks.
Her husband is greatly respected
when he deliberates with the city fathers.
She designs gowns and sells them,
brings the sweaters she knits to the dress shops.
Her clothes are well-made and elegant,
and she always faces tomorrow with a smile.
When she speaks she has something worthwhile to say,
and she always says it kindly.
She keeps an eye on everyone in her household,
and keeps them all busy and productive.
Her children respect and bless her;
her husband joins in with words of praise:
"Many women have done wonderful things,
but you've outclassed them all!"
Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades.
The woman to be admired and praised
is the woman who lives in the Fear-of-God.
Give her everything she deserves!
Festoon her life with praises!
________

Thank you, Lord, for blessing me with a godly mother. Her fingerprints are forever stamped on my life.

Simple Pleasure - Pretty High Heels

Despite one notable crash landing, two small bunions and a few corns, I've been a lover (and a wearer) of high heels since my 13th birthday. Blame Mother. She had some dynamite shoes when I was a kid, and she could sashay across a room like nobody's business. I couldn't wait to grow up and follow suit.

And one day, I did. It was a red-letter day, indeed. Charlie's Shoe Store. Meridian, MS. The color was black and cream. Slingbacks. Tiny laces across the throat. Mother said yes, I jumped for joy, and a love affair began.

I wore my leopard high heels today (seen above), and I felt like a million bucks. Crash landings, bunions and corns? Please. Don't make me laugh. It's a small price to pay for something so pleasurable.
